Manuscript Submission

Guidelines for Authors

  1. Manuscripts must be submitted via the Journal of Arts, Letters and Philosophy platform (revistaalpha.ulagos.cl) as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx), formatted on letter-size paper using 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1.5 line spacing and 3 cm margins. The recommended length for articles is 12 to 20 pages; for short notes, 10 pages; and for reviews, 5 pages. For articles that include phonetic symbols, the Ipaphon font must be used. The font for graphics must also be Times New Roman.
  2. Attach a PDF file of the rights assignment form, signed by all authors, to the original manuscript.
  3. If the manuscript contains tables, graphs, symbols, images, or diagrams, they must be included in the body of the text as images (JPEG) and a backup copy must be provided in PDF format.
  4. All submissions, except for reviews and notes, must include an abstract in Spanish and English, between 5 and 10 lines in length. Include a translation of the article title and between four and six keywords or key concepts, in Spanish and English. Abstracts must appear immediately after the article title. Additionally, at the end of the article, the author's mailing address and email address must be provided, along with the name of the institution to which he/she belongs (if applicable), as well as his/her email address and ORCID.
  5. Manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Arts, Literature, and Philosophy may be articles, notes, or book review. They must be written in Spanish. All quotations taken from texts written in another language must be translated into Spanish. The author decides whether to include the quotation in its original language in the body of the article with the translation as a footnote, or vice versa; otherwise, the author may simply include the quotation in its translated version.
  6. The name of the translator must be indicated in the References. If the author of the manuscript makes the translation, this should be indicated with the phrase "Translated by the author" or "My translation" in parentheses at the end of the citation.
  7. Articles are published only if they are unanimously approved by the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arts, Letters, and Philosophy, following an external peer review, the decision of which is final and non-appealable. For editorial purposes, the Editorial Board reserves the right to make any necessary adjustments to maintain consistency in style.
  8. The Journal of Arts, Literature, and Philosophy follows the APA (American Psychological Association) style guide for citations, references, tables, figures, graphs, and the structure of the cited works; therefore, all manuscripts must adhere to this style guide.

For more information on APA style, please consult the corresponding manual published by the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th Edition).

  1. It is recommended that footnotes be used exclusively to add information or make comments that are not appropriate to be included in the body of the article. Bibliographic references should be included in the Cited Works Section at the end of the manuscript.
  2. Since Issue No. 20 (December 2004), ALPHA has been indexed in the SciELO—Scientific Electronic Library Online—database; Starting with Issue No. 24 (July 2007), ALPHA has been included in Thomson Scientific's Art and Humanities Index Citation and incorporated into Web of Science; and starting with Issue No. 48 (July 2019), ALPHA is indexed in the SCOPUS database.

To facilitate the manuscript review and editing process, authors are asked to strictly follow the instructions provided.

Style Guidelines

General guidelines for the text in Word:

  • Letter-size paper (21.59 cm x 27.94 cm)
  • Margins: Top and bottom: 3 cm / Left and right: 3 cm / Bottom margin: 1.25 cm.
  • General text font: Times New Roman, 12-point, 1.5 line spacing. No lines or spaces between paragraphs; first line indented by 1.0 cm
  • Direct quotations in a separate paragraph: 11-point font, 1.0 line spacing, and 2.0 paragraph indentation
  • Footnotes: 10-point font, 1.5 line spacing.
  • Abstract and keywords in Spanish and English, 11-point font, 1.0 line spacing.
  • Title in English.
  • Key words or concepts separated by semicolons.
  • Additional information about the article—for example, project and/or funding details—should be listed at the end of the manuscript, before the Reference section.

Epigraphs

The style guidelines for ALPHA Journal of Arts, Literature, and Philosophy will follow the divisions and subdivisions the author chooses for the text's structure, using Arabic numerals.

Style Guidelines for Texts

  • There should be no blank lines between paragraphs, except before an epigraph and before and after direct quotations set off in a separate paragraph.
  • Titles of literary works, as well as Latinisms and foreign loanwords, are set in italics. Italics are not used for proper nouns such as names of people, institutions, or places.
  • Avoid using bold; if you want to highlight a part of the text, you can use italics or quotation marks.

Style Guidelines for Book Reviews

Book reviews should begin with the complete citation of the book being reviewed, in the following format: Michael HUEMER, The Problem of Political Authority. Deusto, 2019. 696 pp.

The reviewer's name and institutional affiliation should be listed at the end of the text. Reviews should not include footnotes or a cited works at the end. Unless there is a justified exception, they will not exceed 5 pages in length, and the format will be the same as that described above for articles.

Manuscript Eligibility

  • The process of assigning reviewers to a manuscript cannot begin if the submission does not comply with all the guidelines listed above.
  • ALPHA Journal of Arts, Literature, and Philosophy has a policy of not publishing articles by the same author in consecutive issues.
